A USA Today project called "Gangs Next door" provided a window into several communities across New York State struggling with a cycle of gang violence stretching back decades-long. In Poughkeepsie, I spent two months speaking with community members, local officials, law enforcement, and grassroots organizations to give insight into what it is like living in a community grappling with gun violence. Not a single person I spoke with living in the Northside of the city was untouched by gun violence. Their heartbreaking stories show the resilience of those living in Poughkeepsie, but also their love and hope for a better future for their hometown.
